Did you know that stress can be contagious?
We’ve all heard about secondhand smoke. But have you heard of secondhand stress? Studies have shown that we can absorb stress chemicals from people around us, which can have an impact on our blood pressure, heart and mental well-being.
But…you can do something about it.
Though stress may be “contagious,” there are still things you can do to lower your stress levels.
- During times of stress, SLEEP is essential to refreshing your body and mind. Most adults need between 7-9 hours per night.
- During EXERCISE, your brain releases chemicals that create positive feelings and make you feel better both physically and mentally.
- A BALANCED DIET and plenty of WATER can help your body process stress. Avoid too much caffeine, alcohol and processed or fatty foods.
- DEEP BELLY BREATHING is known to reduce stress. Try to find a quiet space, close your eyes, and:
- Inhale through your nose for a count of 5
- Hold your breath for 3 seconds
- Exhale through your mouth for a count of 5
- Repeat
